Thirty-two cows were found dead in a forest near Osara Community in the Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State following a rainstorm yesterday.
According to a statement by the Ogun State Police Command, the incident was reported at about 4:40 p.m. by two herders who jointly owned the livestock. The herders, who are residents of the Osara Community, said the animals died during a torrential downpour earlier in the day and suspected a lightning strike as the cause.
A team from the Aregbe Divisional Headquarters, led by the Divisional Police Officer, visited the scene for an on-the-spot assessment. The police said the cattle were found lying lifeless in various positions in the forest, with no signs of physical injury or foul play.
The owners of the cows told the police they did not suspect any individual or group to be responsible for the incident and made no allegations of sabotage.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Ogunlowo, urged residents to remain calm and view the incident as a natural occurrence. He assured that the scene had been secured for proper documentation and possible further investigation.
The value of the lost livestock had yet to be determined at the time of the report.
Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Omolola Odutola, issued the statement on behalf of the command.0
