Breaking: Tinubu taps ‘taxman’ Oyedele as minister of state for finance

Must read

Bola Tinubu has nominated Taiwo Oyedele as Minister of State for Finance, replacing Doris Uzoka-Anite in a move that signals continuity in the administration’s fiscal reform agenda.

Uzoka-Anite has been reassigned as Minister of State for Budget and National Planning — her third portfolio under the current administration — underscoring ongoing adjustments within the federal cabinet.

In a statement issued Tuesday, presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said the president has forwarded Oyedele’s nomination to the Senate for confirmation in a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio

Reform Architect Moves Into Cabinet

Oyedele’s nomination formalises a transition from advisory reform architect to cabinet-level policymaker. Until his nomination, the 50-year-old economist chaired the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms — the body that designed and drove sweeping changes to Nigeria’s tax architecture aimed at improving revenue mobilisation, simplifying compliance, and broadening the tax base.

The reforms emerged as a central plank of Tinubu’s economic restructuring programme, which has prioritised fiscal consolidation, non-oil revenue expansion, and structural adjustment of public finance.

A native of Ikaram-Akoko in Ondo State, Oyedele combines academic, private-sector, and policy experience. He began his tertiary education at Yaba College of Technology, where he earned a Higher National Diploma in Accountancy and Finance, before obtaining a BSc in Applied Accounting from Oxford Brookes University.

He has also completed executive education programmes at the London School of Economics, Yale University, Gordon Institute of Business Science, and the Harvard Kennedy School — institutions known for public policy, governance, and leadership training.

Private Sector Pedigree

Before his foray into public policy advisory work, Oyedele spent 22 years at PwC, joining in 2001 and rising to become Fiscal Policy Partner and Africa Tax Leader. His tenure at the global professional services firm positioned him at the intersection of tax policy, corporate advisory, and government engagement across multiple African jurisdictions.

In academia, he serves as a professor at Babcock University in Ogun State and as a visiting scholar at the Lagos Business School, further reinforcing his policy and research credentials.

Policy Implications

Oyedele’s elevation into the Finance Ministry suggests that the administration intends to consolidate and operationalise its fiscal reform blueprint from within the executive arm. With Nigeria facing revenue constraints, debt servicing pressures, and demands for tax harmonisation across federal and subnational levels, his appointment places a technocrat at the centre of fiscal policy execution.

The nomination now awaits Senate confirmation.
