President Bola Tinubu has accepted the resignation of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, following what was described as “pressing family considerations.”

In a statement released by the president’s spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, the President expressed appreciation for Egbetokun’s service and commended his decades of commitment to the Nigeria Police Force and the nation.

“I thank him for his decades of distinguished service to the Nigeria Police Force and our nation. His dedication, professionalism and commitment to strengthening our internal security architecture are deeply appreciated,” the President stated.

To ensure continuity in leadership amid prevailing security challenges, Tinubu announced the appointment of Assistant Inspector General of Police Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector General of Police with immediate effect.

The President expressed confidence in Disu’s capacity to lead the Force during this transitional period.

“I am confident that his experience, operational depth, and leadership capacity will provide steady direction for the Force at this critical time,” the statement read.

Tinubu further disclosed that, in line with the provisions of the Police Act 2020, he will convene the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector General of Police before forwarding his name to the Senate for confirmation.

The Presidency reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to strengthening national security and ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force remains professional, accountable, and adequately equipped to fulfill its constitutional mandate.

Kayode Egbetokun

Kayode Egbetokun served as Inspector General of Police during a period marked by complex internal security challenges, including insurgency threats, banditry, kidnapping, and urban crime. His tenure focused on institutional reforms, operational restructuring, and strengthening inter-agency collaboration within Nigeria’s security architecture

Although the President cited “pressing family considerations” as the reason for his resignation, there have been public discussions and controversies surrounding aspects of his leadership and security management during his tenure.

Tunji Disu

Tunji Disu, before he was appointed Acting IGP, served as an Assistant Inspector General of Police and previously held strategic operational roles within the Force. He is widely regarded within policing circles for his operational command experience, particularly in metropolitan and high-risk environments.

If confirmed by the Senate after consideration by the Nigeria Police Council, Disu would become the substantive Inspector General of Police under the Tinubu administration.
