The late Peter Rufai

Nigeria’s football fraternity was thrown into mourning today following the sudden death of legendary goalkeeper Peter Rufai, fondly known as Dodomayana.

He was 61.

The news of his passing was confirmed by former national teammate Waidi Akanni, though Rufai’s family is yet to release an official statement. Tributes have begun pouring in from fans, former colleagues, and sports administrators, all mourning the loss of a man widely regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers in Nigerian history.

Rufai was a colossus between the sticks during Nigeria’s golden era of football. As the Super Eagles’ first-choice goalkeeper, he played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s historic 1994 Africa Cup of Nations victory, a tournament that heralded a new dawn for Nigerian football. He also represented the country at two FIFA World Cups — USA ’94 and France ’98 — solidifying his place as a true football great.

Known for his cat-like reflexes, commanding presence, and unflinching composure under pressure, Rufai earned over 60 caps for the Super Eagles. But beyond his on-pitch heroics, he embodied leadership and integrity — values that earned him admiration both at home and abroad.

His professional career spanned several European clubs, including stints in Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain, where he donned the gloves for Deportivo La Coruña. Upon retirement, he dedicated his life to football development and youth mentoring, establishing the Staruf Football Academy in Lagos, where he mentored young talents and championed the importance of education alongside sport.

Rufai’s nickname Dodomayana was not just a fan favourite; it reflected his royal lineage as the son of a traditional ruler — a heritage he bore with grace and humility.

A symbol of Nigeria’s footballing pride, Peter Rufai leaves behind a legacy etched in history and a generation forever inspired by his exploits.
