A fresh political showdown has erupted — this time in the law court.
Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi has slammed activist Deji Adeyanju with a ₦1.5 billion defamation lawsuit, accusing him of spreading damaging lies on social media.
The case, filed at the Anambra State High Court, claims that Adeyanju’s posts falsely portrayed Obi as a “religious bigot,” “fraud,” and “political prostitute.” Obi says the statements were malicious and meant to destroy his reputation.
He is asking the court to declare the remarks defamatory, order a public apology and retraction, and award him ₦1.5 billion in damages — ₦500 million as aggravated damages and ₦1 billion as general damages.
Adeyanju, however, is standing his ground. He says he welcomes the lawsuit and is ready to defend his words in court.
The case has set social media buzzing, with Nigerians sharply divided over the fine line between free speech and defamation.
Observers say the outcome could redefine how far political commentary can go in Nigeria’s digital space.
