Gas explosion rocks Ajuwon area of Lagos

A gas explosion Thursday threw residents of Iju Isaga into pandemonium when a truck laden with petroleum exploded around at Cele Bus Stop, Iju Isaga area of Ifako Local Government area of Lagos State.

According to the Lagos State Emergency Agency (LASEMA), many vehicles, an event centre and a plank market were also destroyed in the explosion.

An eye witness account told Fedredsnews that the incident happened around 3:15pm from a truck conveying petrol.

As at the time of filling this report, the actual casualty figure cannot be ascertained, but the eye witness said that he saw three dead persons brought out of the scene. Fedredsnews cannot independently confirm this.

Many vehicles, motorcycles, tricycles were burnt in the inferno.

A statement from Lagos State Emergency Agency said, “On arrival at the scene, it was observed that there was a gas explosion at the aforementioned address

“Further investigation revealed that an unknown truck conveying gasoline had a lone accident and exploded.

“The impact of the explosion led to fire at adjoining buildings and several vehicles were burnt.

Ibrahim Farinloye, the acting coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency, said the gasoline-laden tanker was trying to enter a gas plant at Iju and exploded before entering.

“People sustained minor burns. 15 people were admitted at Iju Waterworks Clinic, two referred to General Hospital, three on critical observation, and 10 are being treated presently,” Mr Farinloye said.

“Several persons were injured and have been taken to the nearest hospital for treatment,” LASEMA said in a statement.
