From Nagrig to Anfield: Mohamed Salah says goodbye to the home that made him immortal

Must read

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah will leave the club at the conclusion of the 2025/26 season, bringing an end to a remarkable nine-year spell at Anfield—one defined not just by trophies and records, but by a deeply human journey of resilience, belonging, and legacy.

Long before he became the face of Liverpool FC, Salah was a young boy navigating the narrow roads of Nagrig, in Egypt’s Gharbia Governorate, chasing a football dream that often seemed distant. His early rise at El Mokawloon earned him a move to Europe, but his first taste of the Premier League with Chelsea proved a harsh education. Limited opportunities and loan spells in Italy threatened to stall his progress.

Instead, they forged him.

At AS Roma, Salah rediscovered himself—sharpening the explosive pace, intelligent movement, and ruthless finishing that would later terrorise defences across England and Europe. By the time Liverpool brought him back in 2017, he returned not as a prospect, but as a player with purpose.

What followed was the stuff of legend.

Under Jürgen Klopp, Salah became the heartbeat of a side that restored Liverpool to the summit of world football. His record-breaking debut season set the tone, and over the years he delivered goals with unerring consistency, helping secure the UEFA Champions League in 2019 and the long-awaited Premier League title in 2020.

Yet beyond the silverware, it was the bond—with the city, the supporters, and the club’s identity—that defined his time at Anfield.

The Egyptian international reached an agreement with Liverpool to make his departure public early, providing clarity for supporters. In a video shared on his social channels, Salah spoke not as a global superstar, but as someone saying goodbye to a place that reshaped his life:

“Hello everyone, unfortunately, the day has come. This is the first part of my farewell. I will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season.

“I wanted to start by saying that I never imagined how deeply this club, this city, these people would become part of my life.

“This club will always be my home to me and to my family.

“Liverpool is not just a football club, it’s a passion, it’s a history, it’s a spirit. I can’t explain in words to anyone not part of this club.

“We celebrated victory, we won the most important trophies, and we fought together through the hardest time in our lives.

“I want to thank everyone who was part of this club throughout my time here, especially the teammates, past and present.

“And to the fans, I don’t have enough words. The support you showed me through the best time of my career, and you stood by me in the toughest times. It’s something I will never forget and something I will take with me always.

“Leaving is never easy. You gave me the best time of my life. I will always be one of you.

“Thank you for everything.

“Because of all of you, I will never walk alone.”

Salah’s departure will not simply mark the end of a chapter for Liverpool—it will close a story arc that began in obscurity and rose to global greatness, carried by talent, setbacks, reinvention, and an unbreakable connection with a club that, in his own words, became home.
