LAGOS — The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has issued a comprehensive update on the fire incident at Terminal 1 of the Lagos Murtala Muhammed International Airport, confirming that emergency response operations remain active as containment and recovery efforts continue.
According to FAAN, a crane was deployed to support rescue operations at the Control Tower, leading to the successful evacuation of all 14 individuals who were initially trapped in the facility. Six casualties — three males and three females — were recorded. All are reported to be in stable condition. One of the affected persons has been transferred to the FAAN Headquarters Hospital for further medical evaluation and remains stable.
As a precautionary measure, authorities have fully evacuated the sixth floor of the affected facility to facilitate ongoing emergency operations and mitigate potential risks.
Preliminary findings by the Fire Service indicate that the blaze originated from the server room on the first floor of Terminal 1. While the fire in the departure hall has been largely brought under control, emergency responders continue close monitoring to prevent any spread to adjoining sections of the terminal.
In line with established safety protocols, the airport’s airspace has been temporarily closed. The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) is working to establish a temporary Control Tower to ensure the safe and timely restoration of flight operations.
FAAN confirmed that all emergency procedures were promptly activated and that it is collaborating with relevant agencies to safeguard lives, infrastructure, and operational integrity. The authority assured the public that further verified updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
