The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has resumed direct revenue collection at the cargo terminals of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, bringing to an end a 15-year suspension of the practice.
The announcement was made in a statement issued on Saturday by FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Obiageli Orah, through the agency’s official X account.
The statement disclosed that personnel from the Directorate of Cargo Development and Services have been stationed at the cargo release points within the warehouses of the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company and Skyway Aviation Handling Company to oversee the real-time collection of outstanding cargo charges.
Describing the move as a significant milestone, FAAN noted that this marks the first time in over a decade that its officials are physically present at the cargo terminals to supervise revenue collection activities.
The authority added that the initiative is being implemented in close collaboration with the PTC Customs Area Command, led by Comptroller T. Awe. According to FAAN, the arrangement has already begun to curb revenue leakages and strengthen accountability across the air cargo value chain.
The development, the statement said, underscores FAAN’s renewed focus on operational efficiency, transparency, and enhanced inter-agency cooperation aimed at boosting revenue generation and improving the ease of doing business within Nigeria’s aviation industry.
FAAN further indicated that the progress recorded at MMIA is expected to serve as a template for similar reforms at other airports nationwide, in line with its broader strategy to optimise cargo operations and unlock additional value within the sector.
