President Bola Tinubu has lifted the State of Emergency imposed on Rivers State and directed Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy and members of the State House of Assembly to return to office on Thursday, September 18.

The President, in a statement on Wednesday, explained that normalcy had been restored in the state.

The statement read: “It therefore gives me great pleasure to declare that the emergency in Rivers State of Nigeria shall end with effect from midnight today. The Governor, His Excellency Siminalayi Fubara, the deputy governor, Her Excellency Ngozi Nma Odu, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly and the speaker, Martins Amaewhule, will resume work in their offices from 18 September 2025.”

Tinubu had declared a state of emergency in the oil-rich state on March 18, 2025, appointing retired Vice-Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as administrator for six months. The President at the time said the decision was crucial to restore peace in Rivers and safeguard key national assets.

Both the Senate and the House of Representatives endorsed the proclamation on March 20, 2025.
